A classically trained guitarist, Maneli Jamal doesn't make experimental music in the expected sense of the term; it isn't droney rock or ambient avant-garde that Jamal produces, but instead solo acoustic guitar pieces that showcase experimental playing techniques. With quite the turbulent childhood, involving Jamal's family moving from Belarus to Germany to Texas to Canada, Jamal's music incorporates multiple world influences, one moment resembling a classical Latin ballad and the next sounding more like a Middle Eastern raga. Somehow Maneli Jamal has fused all of these influences and experimental techniques together to create lovely and interesting neoclassical guitar work that is impressive to see in a live setting.
