With a name taken from the full name of the formerly independent state of Venice, "The Most Serene Republic of Venice," one can see that the Ontario, Canada-based group The Most Serene Republic is an indie rock band that makes no attempt to hide its members' intellectual sensibilities (pretentious of otherwise). The band's history with coming upwith interesting names began when its founding members, Ryan Lenssen and Adrian Jewett got together to form The Oneironauts in 2003. Following some line-up changes, the group changed its name to The Most Serene Republic and would go on to release its debut LP, Underwater Cinematographer in late 2004. Since then, The Most Serene Republic has experienced a good deal of success in Canada as one of the country's premier representatives of indie rock.
