Infused with 20th-century sensibilities, Jesus Christ Superstar tells the non-Biblical story of Jesus and Judas during the last week of Jesus' life. In this modern interpretation of Biblical accounts, Jesus is depicted as human, Judas is arguably deserving of empathy and Mary Magdalene falls in love with the alleged son of God. The rock musical was first produced as a musical album before it was performed on stage. Temporarily banned by the BBC for being "sacrilegious," the album eventually made it to the number one spot on the Billboard Chart in 1971, the same year as its acclaimed Broadway debut.
