The Grand Lady of Timbuktu, Khaira Arby was one of Mali's most impressive singers. Arby blasts her powerful voice over tense, jittery arrangements centered around naturalistic percussion and nervy, repeating guitar figures. Being from a nomadic tradition, Arby sings her songs in four different languages--Arabic as well as the Malian dialects of Sonrhai, Tamashek and Bambara.
