Los Angeles-born rapper Mike Mictlan quickly moved to Minneapolis to be part of the growing hip-hop collective that is Doomtree, a crew of hip-hop artists working in the popular emo-rap genre. Caucasian males often populate this genre more than those from different cultural backgrounds, though Mictlan is an exception, representing the Southern California Latino community. Mictlan focuses mainly on his technical rapping style, using a double-time cadence and fanciful wordplay--a central tenant of a lot of underground rap in general. Mictlan's first album False Hopes 8: Deity for Hire was released by Doomtree in 2005, and is more of a mixtape than an album, moving quickly through many songs, and offering song sketches rather than a focused collection.
