Vancouver-based producer Cameron Reed claims to create "surf-step" and while this genre categorization conjures up images of upbeat jangly guitars meshed with wobbly dubstep bass, his music doesn't quite fit those guidelines. Performing under the pseudonym Babe Rainbow, Reed's "surf-step" really could only be called such if he was surfing on a cold, overcast day with no waves. Though the music of Babe Rainbow does incorporate elements of dubstep, it can essentially be summed up as atmospheric, downtempo soundscapes with haunting vocal samples and beats slowed down to an eerie distortion. Babe Rainbow caught the ear of Warp Records executives and released his debut EP in 2010.
