Progressive metal act Symphony X was formed in 1994 in New Jersey. While the band initially only attracted fans in Japan, the group began shifting its style to incorporate more neoclassical metal elements and subsequently drew the attention of American metal circles. Releasing primarily concept albums, which take a common myth, like Atlantis, or famous work, like Paradise Lost, and essentially rework the plot to a more sci-fi nature, the band's albums sound more like they're derived from fantasy video games than classic works. These reworked concept albums have drawn a large fan base throughout the US and Europe, making Symphony X a fairly respected band on the metal scene.
