A real oddity of local tradition, the Whittlesey Straw Bear Festival is a revival of an ancient farming rite which takes place in January. A ploughman is dressed up in straw (the straw bear) and leads a procession of dancers and folk musicians through the village. The week leading up to the procession is marked by concerts and a ceilidh, and a procession sees all the village pubs packed out, with Morris dancers performing at each one. In the evening there are barn dances and ceilidhs, and at the festival's end the straw bear is burnt.
