Born Margret Wander, rapper and spoken word artist Dessa is a member of the Minneapolis-based alternative hip-hip collective known as Doomtree. Both within the group and in her solo work, Dessa is well-regarded for her metaphor-heavy poetry and ability to inhabit and rhyme from the perspective of different fictitious characters. The background serving as context to her words is often very sparse, sometimes relying only on A Capella arrangements rather than samples or electronic beats. Apart from music, Dessa is also a published author of both fiction and collections of poetry. Her 2010 album, A Badly Broken Code, was released to positive critical acclaim.
