The Consul is the first full-length opera by the Italian-American composer and librettist Gian Carlo Menotti. Set in an unidentified totalitarian country in Europe, the production follows the story of John Sorel, a political protester on the run from the secret police. Hiding out in his house, he plans to flee to the border and tells his wife Magda and his family to get visas out of the country and follow him to safety. As their situation turns dire with deaths in the family and the secret police on John's track, The Consul unfolds into a tragic tale of hope and the struggle between the what is right and what is easy.
