Seeming to be nearly oblivious to any sort of modern trends or styles, Winter Family is a unique avant-garde Israeli duo consisting of Ruth Rosenthal and Xavier Klaine. Some blunt comparisons can be made to the haunting ambiance of Brian Eno's catalog or the icy vocal delivery of experimental folk singer Nico, yet neither of these really encapsulate the duo's intense and melancholic approach to songwriting. Often consisting of little more than Klaine's stark piano, organ or harmonium work and the plainspoken lyrics of Rosenthal, Winter Family successfully creates a unique atmosphere all its own, somehow managing to avoid inaccessibility and pretension in the process. The often jarring and unsettling moments the duo is able to capture is even more impressive given the sparse sonic palette it chooses to work from. Winter Family's 2011 LP, Red Sugar, received high marks from indie taste-maker Pitchfork, though the duo most likely will remain a hidden gem waiting to be discovered by patient and open-minded listeners for years to come.
