Los Angeles in the late 1980s was a breeding ground for innovative young musicians. Sure, mainstream music kept perpetuating itself with crappy hair metal bands, but the underground music scene was thriving and bands that would soon become huge were still under wraps--playing small clubs and living in relative obscurity. One of the bands to break open the underground L.A. scene was Jane's Addiction. Though difficult to categorize, by combining elements of alternative rock, funk and punk, the four members of Jane's Addiction created a sound that came to loosely define a time and place in history. While the band has experienced various lineup changes over its storied career, as well as substance abuse problem and a few breakups, the group has managed to hold onto its characteristic style as well as its unmistakable aesthetic.
