With her hit "99 Luftballons," the German pop singer Nena and her band of the same name gained worldwide success in 1983. One year later she released an English version of that song, called "99 Red Balloons." Nena was part of the "Neue Deutsche Welle" (New German Wave) movement and genre that originally derived from punk rock and New Wave music and was very popular by that time in Germany. In 2002, Nena began a successful comeback by basically re-recording and re-releasing her old songs and featuring many well-known German artists.
