Rhubarb is a pink stemmed plant that grows from rhizomes and has multiple health benefits. Lancaster County's annually-celebrated Rhubarb Festival is a family-friendly celebration of this herbaceous plant. Slowly-simmered rhubarb jams, rhubarb-based sauces and dips, sweet desserts and delicious drinks are put up for sale. Cooking contests with rhubarb as the prime ingredients are also a key feature of this fun event. The fun factor of this jolly event goes beyond cooking, with activities like a first-of-its-kind rhubarb race-car derby, rhubarb inspired dress-up competition, pie filling competition, country music and a whole lot of other activities designed for both kids as well as adults. The Rhubarb festival also helps raise money for the county's farmland trust from the money made by the baked goods which were a part of the cooking contest.
