Screeching vocals, daunting guitar arrangements and aberrant drums are all sonic components of the Seattle grunge rock outfit Soundgarden. The band's sound is seething and oftentimes intimidating, but the group's musical ferocity is what gives the band its unwavering strength and originality. Formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1984, Soundgarden was one of the premier bands to champion the grunge genre that emerged out of the Pacific Northwest and received widespread popularity in the early 1990s. Though the group broke up in 1997, leading to lead singer Chris Cornell's marginal solo career and his tenure with the rock supergroup Audioslave, the four original members of Soundgarden reunited in 2010 to play shows and record new studio material. After a Soundgarden concert in May 2017, Cornell was found dead in his hotel room.
