Boy George is the stage name for George Alan O'Dowd, a new wave/pop rock singer/songwriter from Kent, England who emerged out of England's New Romantic movement in the early 1980s and would help bring androgyny and alternative sexualities to wider international exposure and acceptance. Best known for his role as lead singer for the famed 1980s band Culture Club, Boy George and his band would spend a majority of the decade touring and releasing several hits, including their breakthrough second album Colour by Numbers in 1983. The album spawned the hit single "Karma Chameleon," which would hit the #1 spot on charts throughout the world. Boy George would continue his career as a solo artist since the late 1980s, and although his career was marked by several instances of controversy and would never reach the same level of popularity as the Culture Club, Boy George continues to have an extensive following of fans and regularly performs as a singer and DJ throughout the world.
