The wacky, often strange approach to making music that exemplifies The B-52s was responsible for giving the band the much needed push that made the group stand out amongst the astonishing amount of New Wave rock bands that emerged out of the 1980s. The band started making music together in Athens, Georgia and quickly found its trademark sound with female harmonies, surf-style guitar arrangements, "go-go beat" drumming and a "guy vs. gals" vocal approach.
