Sponge is an alternative rock band that was formed in Detroit, Michigan in 1991 by ex-Loudhouse members Vinnie Dombroski, Mike Cross and Tim Cross, as well as Joey Mazzola. After recruiting a drummer, the band was signed to Sony Records in 1994 and released its debut studio album Rotting Pinata, in 1994. Following the release of its sophomore album Wax Ecstatic, in 1996, Sponge earned an opening spot on the Kiss reunion tour with its post-grunge, alternative metal sound and subsequently expanded its fan base into heavy metal audiences. Sponge released its seventh studio album with Three One Three Records in 2013.
