Jazz vocalist and pianist Karrin Allyson, born in Great Bend, Kansas as Karrin Allyson Schoonover, is known for using vocalese and scat vocal techniques. While studying classical piano at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, on a scholarship, Allyson fronted the rock band Tomboy, and belonged to a jazz ensemble as well as the UNO jazz swing choir. After graduating, she focused on her jazz career and moved to Kansas City to start recording music. Her 1992 debut album I Didn't Know About You, was the first of over a dozen albums released by her long time record label Concord Records, over the next twenty years. Allyson has received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album for three of her albums, including her 2008 bilingual release, Imagina: Songs of Brasil. In addition to her extensive discography, Allyson is best known for her seemingly effortless live-performances and the ease with which she leads a band. She tours constantly, in North America and overseas in Brazil, Japan, Europe and Australia, with her feline-like demeanor that is both sultry and cool.
