Primarily a musical vehicle for New York based dance-punk impresario James Murphy, LCD Soundsystem has managed to incorporate educated wit into a charismatic sound that blends danceable disco influences with sneering punk frankness. The band's eponymous 2005 debut LP was a seminal release and helped solidify the group's standing as one of the forefathers of the dance-punk genre. Many serious followers of indie music revere the band with almost cult-like devotion, so when Murphy announced that LCD Soundsystem was shutting down in 2011, the fan base erupted in a frenzy. After a three-hour emotional roller coaster of final show at Madison Square Garden and the gratuitous documentary that followed, Shut Up and Play the Hits, the pioneering group handed itself over to indie folklore. However in 2016, a mere five years after proclaiming itself deceased, LCD Soundsystem resurrected for a string of major festival appearances with the promise of new music, elating dance punks and music snobs alike.
