The statue of the Virgin Mary on Fourvière Hill is one of Lyon's most famous landmarks. Its erection is celebrated on the 8th of December every year, commemorated by the thousands who light lanterns in their windows. This celebration, which the locals prefer to call Illuminations, has lost much of its religious symbolism, but whatever the motivation, it is a tradition, which endures and brings together the entire community.
