From an early age John Medeski knew he had an affinity for piano playing. After learning how to play the instrument at the age of five, Medeski would go on to listen to improvisational jazz great Oscar Peterson extensively and build up his talent for spur of the minute free form jams. After continuing to hone his skills by attending the New England Conservatory in Boston in 1983, Medeski would move to New York, where he'd become deeply immersed in the avant-garde jazz scene there. Starting an experimental jazz trio called Medeski Martin & Wood in 1991, helped build Medeski's notoriety amongst music connoisseurs and stoke his legacy as one of modern piano's greats. Medeski continues to perform with his well-known trio, as well as with an assortment of other musicians in addition to playing as a solo artist.
