Salome is a German-language opera based on the French play of the same name by Oscar Wilde. Composed by Richard Strauss, Salome was first performed in 1905 despite the fact that many cities throughout Europe refused to perform the work due to its controversial nature. The opera follows the biblical story of Princess Salome and her tragic association with John the Baptist. Strauss' opera is perhaps best known for it's rather controversial visual and musical content, of which the Dance of the Seven Vales and the opera's finale remain the most prominent examples.
