Founded in 1880, the Metropolitan Opera is a symbol of resistance towards the upper-class society of that era's NYC. The families with old money were determined to shun the emerging industrialists and hence did not give them entry to the existing Academy of Music opera house. A few of these shunned people got together and developed the idea that gave rise to the present-day Metropolitan Opera. The opera company, ever since its inaugural, has played quite a few seasons with repetitive operas being performed. Over the years, the technology used at the MET has changed and improved along with the cast and its performances. Along with the regular opera, the organization also has new pieces added to its repertoire every few years. What started in New York now also has its branch in Philadelphia. Over the years, the MET's performances have come to be lauded by many.
