Considered pioneers of alternative hip-hop, Arrested Development has been creating Afrocentric music since the early 1990s when gangsta rap was the popular standard. Founded in 1991 in Atlanta, the group introduced itself with the 1992 album 3 Years, 5 Months & 2 Days in the Life Of..., a record that called attention to the problem of homelessness and the rewards of diversity. Immediately recognized as an alternative and socially aware force behind hip-hop, Arrested Development earned critical acclaim for its debut but would never see the same response for any of its subsequent records. The group continued to release albums into the 2000s despite creative differences and lineup changes. With founder and front man Speech still at the helm, Arrested Development released its tenth studio album Standing At the Crossroads, in 2012 just before embarking on its 20th Anniversary Tour.
