The Oakland Athletics are a Major League Baseball team and a member of the American League West Division. Commonly referred to as the A’s, the franchise was founded in 1901 as the Philadelphia Athletics. The team stayed in Philadelphia until 1954, when they moved to Kansas City. After a 13-year stay in the Midwest, the franchise once again relocated, this time to Oakland. Some of the greatest players in history have donned the Athletics uniform including Rickey Henderson, Jimmy Foxx, and Catfish Hunter. In 2002, the A’s won a remarkable 20 games in a row, a feat that was chronicled in the Hollywood movie Moneyball, released in 2011.
