The oratorio Elijah narrates the life and times of the biblical prophet Elijah with the source of the text being the Bible itself. Elijah was composed by Felix Mendelssohn who was deeply influenced by the works of Bach and Handel. The libretto of this piece was contributed by German theologian Julius Schubring. Elijah premiered at the Birmingham Triennial Musical Festival in 1846 and was very well received.
