Based on the 1988 John Waters film of the same name, Hairspray is a musical theater production that follows the life of teenager Tracy Turblad as she wins a coveted role on the fictional television program The Corny Collins Show, and proceeds turn the segregated, traditional show upside down. Set in 1960s Baltimore, the show explores the themes of racism, young love and political activism, all through a flowery lens of 1960s dance music and soulful rhythm and blues.
