After earning a Master of Library and Information Science degree from The University of Georgia, Ernst Greene was unable to find a job as a librarian, resulting in Greene moving back in with his parents and producing songs in his bedroom studio. After releasing two EPs under his Washed Out moniker in 2009, his dreary, downtempo songs were lumped in with the myriad of other similar sounding artists--creating a style of music dubbed chillwave--like Neon Indian and Toro y Moi. Greene released his debut LP as Washed Out, Within and Without, in 2011, and the album, with its lushly orchestrated instrumentals and subtle, yet adept production, helped set Greene apart from his contemporaries and distinguish him as one of the more promising musicians of his generation.
