One of the oldest surviving classical ballets of all time, La Sylphide tells the story of a man set to be married whose circumstantial encounter with a forest fairy throws his plans into disarray. With choreography by Filippo Taglioni and music by Jean-Madeleine Schneitzhoeffer, La Sylphide premiered at the Paris Opera in 1832. Though the main story has remained fairly intact, the ballet itself has gone through a number of rewrites and drafts over its centuries long existence.
