This two-and-a-half-mile curve of water has become one of San Antonio's greatest attractions. The place comes alive with festive lights, which glow brighter in fall and winter, when the annual Ford Holiday River Parade and Lighting Ceremony takes place. The event kicks off with the ceremonial 'Pulling of the Switch' by the mayor, which illuminates more than 122,000 lights along the river, and inaugurates the much-awaited parade. Floats, costumed participants, bands, banners, boats and live music form the body of the parade, which winds down along the meandering waters. Around 150,000 people are expected each year, and many more watch this grand show over live broadcast from the Arneson River Theatre. The Paseo del Rio Association organizes this event during the Thanksgiving-Christmas period, which officially marks the start of the holiday season.
