During the month of September, San Sebastian celebrates the Euskal Jaiak festival, a week of various activities whose common theme is Basque culture. It begins on the first Sunday of September, coinciding with a boat race in the Concha Bat, and ends seven days later. There are Basque rural sports exhibitions, like stone lifting and tree-trunk cutting. There are also open-air concerts of Basque music, traditional dance troupes in the streets, craftsmen working under the gaze of the public and the famous bertsolaris (oral improvisational poets), not to mention the Sagardo Eguna or "cider day" -- a whole day of absolutely free sampling of different ciders.
