Canadian-American singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright has etched a unique sound and is considered one of the strongest male vocalists of his generation. Born in 1973 in New York to folk singer parents, Wainwright spent most of his childhood in Canada. He began playing the piano at the age of six and has continued to develop his vocal and instrumental talents ever since, creating a characteristically baroque-pop style, dubbed "popera" (pop opera). Wainwright has collaborated with such artists as David Byrne and Elton John, who has affectionately proclaimed Wainwright as "the greatest songwriter on the planet."
