Suzanne Vega is an American folk singer and songwriter who grew up in New York City via Santa Monica, CA. As she studied modern dance and English literature at the prestigious High School of Performing Arts, she honed her poetry and songwriting skills enough so that by the time she reached university, she was performing at clubs around Manhattan. Vega released her eponymous first album in 1985 to critical acclaim in the US for her fast brand of fol music. She crossed over in a European audience with her follow-up record Solitude Standing, in 1987, with the hit songs "Luka" and "Tom's Diner," and went on to release five more albums in the next two decades, including her most renowned effort, 1990's Days of Open Hand.
