By pairing rhythmically complex time signatures with dissonant, often virtuosic, styles of music, The Dillinger Escape Plan has helped pioneer a style of music that many refer to as "mathcore." Though The Dillinger Escape Plan is what most people would call a metal band, the group throws in an impressive amount of unusual tonal time changes - elements of math rock - to create an original style of music. The band was formed in New Jersey in 1997 and is widely considered to be one of the leading innovators of the various math fusion genres.
