Also known as the Battle of the Oranges, the Carnevale di Ivrea of Turin, celebrated throughout the city, has a long history. In the 1800's, spectators of a parade began throwing oranges at the participants, and the latter reciprocated in the same manner. Over the years, it evolved into an organized mock battle, with a fixed set of rules demanding that all participants officially enroll, and buy the oranges as ammunition.
