Also known as the Battle of the Oranges, the Carnevale di Ivrea of Turin, celebrated throughout the city, has a long history. In the 1800's, spectators of a parade began throwing oranges at the participants, and the latter reciprocated in the same manner. Over the years, it evolved into an organized mock battle, with a fixed set of rules demanding that all participants officially enroll, and buy the oranges as ammunition. If you are in Turin in the month of February, this is one event you shouldn't miss out on!
