Gruene flourished as a cotton-producing German settlement during the 1840s and emerged as a cotton farming hub in the 1900s before it began to gradually decline and turn into a ghost town. Today, remnants of its glorious era can be witnessed in the historic district through historic structures like the Gruene Hall and the iconic Gruene Water Tower. A popular tourist town sprinkled with cozy bed and breakfasts and unique attractions like the quirky Gruene General Store, the town attracts thousands of history buffs every year to its quaint abode.
