Officially known as The Town of Newton, this picturesque community in Sussex County was incorporated in 1864. Newton's history dates back to the time when the region was inhabited by the Munsee, a branch of the Lenape Native Americans. Over the centuries, the community flourished as a commercial town and today, the bygone era can be explored on a heritage walk of the Newton Town Plot Historic District that is spread across 17 acres (6.8 hectares) and finds a mention on the National Register of Historic Places. The beautiful Georgian Revival style architecture is exemplified with gems such as Christ Church and Sussex County Courthouse. Other attractions include Newton Fire Museum and the Newton Theatre.
