Established in 1787, Charles Town was founded by and named for Charles Washington, the youngest brother of George Washington. During the Civil War, the city witnessed power fluctuations in the hands of the Union and the Confederates. Today, the town preserves its intriguing bygone era through a number of historic buildings such as the Jefferson County Courthouse, the Old Opera House, and Zion Episcopal Church. The Jefferson County Museum also houses a variety of artifacts that offer interesting insights into the city's history. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the Cool Spring Nature Preserve, which replete with verdant meadows, marshes, and wooded forests.
