Possibly architect Archibald Simpson's most impressive work, the Music Hall consists of two distinct parts. The Assembly Room (which is unforgettable due to its Greek-style Ionic columns, majestically hewn from granite) looks onto Union Street. Simpson attained the honor of designing this building by winning a competition run by the Duke of Gordon, and earned himself the princely sum of 50 guineas into the bargain. The Concert Hall, designed by James Matthews was added later in 1858, and it is in here that the building's many productions and shows are staged. The Music Hall claims to have been Aberdeen's first cinema, showing some of the world's first films back in 1896. The building was refurbished in 1985 and has now regained all its former splendor. This is one of the Granite City's classic sights.
