Place du Palais, Monaco, 98000
Undoubtedly the crowning glory of Monaco, the Prince's Palace of Monaco stands in unabashed and formidable splendor on a rocky cliff in the principality. The palace, with its primary Renaissance-style architecture, assumes a fierce, bastion-like structure than its more palatial counterparts in Europe. This is because the palace was originally built as a Genoese fortress in 1911, only to be occupied by the Grimaldi family since the end of the 13th Century who then transformed it into a residence. The state apartments in the palace are the most noteworthy, with each room displaying elements and evidences of its aristocratic past. The Throne Room, where the official guests seek an audience with the prince, is swathed in Carrara marble flooring, while the Empire-style throne rests on an elevated dais, sheltered by a crimson baldachin, or canopy of estate. Other stunning rooms are the brocade-laced Blue and Red Rooms, and the opulently embellished Mazarin Room with 18th Century furniture. The palace is deemed the official residence of the Prince of Monaco, and has remained so since more than seven centuries.
