While it may be challenging to imagine experiencing absolute wilderness only an hour from the sprawling environs of downtown Los Angeles, the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area is a true oasis of greenery. The park stretches 157,700 acres (63,818 hectares) along the southern California coast and is dotted with verdant hills, breathtaking canyons and a series of exquisite sandy landscapes. Animals like bobcats, coyotes, and mountain lions call the park their home, while dolphins and whales can be spotted just off the park's shores.
