Celebrated late-Victorian theater architect Frank Matcham built the Hackney Empire in 1901, complete with electric lighting and central heat, a rarity in its time. Originally a music hall, Hackney Empire went through several incarnations over the decades, including a burlesque house, bingo hall, and a television studio before shutting down in 1984. Painstakingly restored to its original splendor, the theater reopened in 1986 and re-established itself as a leading venue for theater and up and coming comics.
