Located directly across the river from its twin, St. Paul is the center of Minnesota's government and an interesting counterpoint to Minneapolis. Known as the 'Last City of the East', St. Paul is equipped with a longstanding historic tenor that manifests in well-preserved turn-of-the-century Victorian architecture, a smattering of historical buildings from the early settlement era, and the famous Cathedral of Saint Paul, which dominates the city's skyline. St. Paul's history also lives on in the cavernous depths of the Wabasha Street Caves, an erstwhile speakeasy during the Prohibition-era that was transformed into the Castle Royal bar at the time. Apart from its storied Prohibition-era chapter, St. Paul is a scenic city that transforms splendidly as one season rolls into another; fiery plumes of fall's multicolored foliage give way to frosty winters that herald the onset of the Saint Paul Winter Carnival.
