TOURIST ATTRACTIONS & SIGHTSEEING, PRACTICAL INFORMATION
The Romanesque structure of Duomo di Volterra at the center of the city is also known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and is believed to be built on site of a small church which existed since 9th century. The interior of the cathedral is beautifully adorned with frescoes, wall-paintings and sculptures made by artists of the time. The oldest surviving piece of art is the wooden group of Deposition which dates back to the year 1228. Others include artistic sculpture on the high altar by Mino da Fiesole, the painting of 'Annunciation' by Luca Signorelli and works of other artists such as Leonardo da Pistoia and Benvenuto di Giovanni.
