One of Northern Europe's earliest cathedrals, Dom zu Aachen was called the Royal Church of St. Mary at Aachen during the Middle Ages. Construction of Dom zu Aachen was commissioned by Charles the Great in the 7th century. The church is widely known as the coronation site of German kings and queens from 936 to 1531. Dom zu Aachen features two arresting styles of architecture. The Palatine Chapel of Dom zu Aachen is built in Carolingian-Romanesque architectural style while the choir features Gothic architecture. It is a listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Guided tours are available, please check the website for their timings.
