Germany
Situated where the Lippe River meets the Rhine, the city of Wesel is one of the most historically rich city. Capital of its namesake district, the city was established around the 12th Century and was also a member of the Hanseatic League in the 15th Century. Serving as an important military base during the Second World War, the city underwent several changes before it finally was taken by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Numerous monuments still reflect Wesel's history. The Prussian Baroque style Berlin Gate, Citadel Wesel and Willibrordi Cathedral are the defining monuments while the Donkey from Wesel (Esel von Wesel) adds a tongue-in-cheek humor to the townscape. Explore the cobbled market squares, quaint streets and gastronomy of Germany at this lovely city.
