Situated at 8,909 feet (2,715 meters) above sea level, Crested Butte was once a thriving coal mine hub. Its mountainous topography makes it a great destination for adventure sports and outdoor activities like skiing and snowboarding in winter, and mountain biking, hiking and rock climbing in summer. Throughout the year, it hosts several cultural festivals that are a popular draw. Apart from the splendid outdoor attractions, Crested Butte is also home to the Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum, which explores the history of the region through fascinating exhibits. Other attractions include the Crested Butte Mountain Resort, Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory and Crested Butte Nordic Center.
