The impressive Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex was most famous for being one of the largest industrial sites in the city of Essen, Germany. The former coal mine has since transformed into a hotbed of cultural activity in the city housing two spectacular museums – the Ruhr Museum and the Red Dot Museum and tons of other little chic cafés and eateries. The landscape is modern and edgy and also houses a SANA'A (Japanese architect) design school which is definitely worth a visit for aspiring or present architecture students. The awe-inspiring industrial monument has been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
