The Championship Course is a historic and popular boat racing course on the River Thames. With a distance of 4 miles (6.7 kilometers), it is marked by two stone posts on either of the ends at Chiswick bridge and the Putney bridge. Boat races take place according to the tidal flow of the river and both the landmark bridges can serve as starting points and ending points. The famous annual Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race takes place on the Championship Course along with various other events such as Scullers Head, Veterans Head, Head of the River Races and the Boustead Cup. A historic international match between the universities of Oxford and Harvard took place here in 1869 and is considered to be the landmark event which piqued the interest of many noted educational institutions in the United States to take up the sport of rowing. Today there are many rowing clubs located along the course where visitors can get an experience of the challenging sport.
